Hope everyone is enjoying being back into some sort of school routine at home - whatever that might look like in your house! Your work packs have plenty of Literacy and Numeracy activities in them but I have posted an Eco Schools Home Challenge in the Letters section of the website - I have added a picture of it here as well. There are some WAU ideas and activities for you to try out if you would like, all of which are linked to our Eco Schools targets. There are also house points up for grabs as well if you want to send in any pictures!
Hope you are staying safe and washing your hands,
Mrs Craig.
While we can't keep up with our Active Travel to school these days, Ronan, one of the Sustrans officers has created a Climbing High Activity that you can do with your family throughout the Easter holidays. Ronan likes keeping everyone active, but he’s also included a wee bit of maths, some geography, some mapping, and a sport of history all wrapped up in a fun themed activity for the whole family.
You may have spotted various people on social media in recent days summiting their staircases multiple times to climb the equivalent of Everest / Mont Blanc / Slemish, etc. That’s the general gist of Ronan’s activity!
Here is the link to his YouTube video: https://youtu.be/xE94l47b5Xo
I have added the Activity sheet onto our Letters page and if you want to email in any photos of you completing the climbing activity we will add them to our Sustrans page.
Have fun and get climbing!

Road Safety Mascot Competition
Mascots help play a significant role in engaging and captivating young audiences and inspiring them to participate in activities. Our mascot will help to support our road safety education programmes amongst children and young people.
Rather than relying on professional illustrators, Road Safe NI want to tap into the enthusiasm and creativity of our young people and are urging children in primary 5, 6 and 7 across Northern Ireland to get involved in our competition.
We are looking for a character that is imaginary and original. He/she/it could be a person, an animal or an inanimate object that captures road safety and the imagination of the public.
Entries must include a name for the Mascot and can also include a brief story (optional) about the character which should be no more than 100 words. Both the name and short story can be completed on a separate page. Submissions will be judged on creativity and artistic quality.
A special Road Safe NI panel will choose the top three designs after the date for submissions closes on 1st May 2020. The winning mascot designs will be revealed at the end of May 2020.
We will work with a professional illustrator to bring the creations to life. The winning mascot design will be made into our official mascot. The mascot will be showcased at all Road Safe NI events and campaigns and be used to promote our road safety work across the country.
Entry Criteria
Best Regards

Easy home made Pizza
If you’d like to try something fun and easy in the kitchen, why not make pizza? This recipe came from John Torode and his wife Lisa…and it is really easy, tasty and budget friendly too.
You need (for the base):
250g natural yogurt
250 SR flour
1 teasp baking powder
Pinch salt
Mix ingredients together in a bowl and divide into 4 pieces. Roll out onto a floured surface. Heat oven to as high a temperature as you can. Put base onto a floured tray and bake for 4 mins. When you take it out of the oven, turn it over and top with tomato sauce or pasta sauce. (I cheated and used a tomato and garlic ready made sauce!)
If you want to make your own tomato sauce:
1 tin tomatoes
1 onion
1 tablesp olive oil
Salt and Pepper
Start to cook onions in the oil. Add a splash of water and stir. Then add another splash of water and cook down. Season, add the tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes.
Top your pizza with whatever you have!
Some ideas:
mushrooms, ham, sweetcorn, chicken, pineapple, pepperoni, tomatoes, peppers…
cover with cheese and put back into the hot oven for 4 – 5 minutes
slice and eat. Enjoy 😊
There are a variety of activities that are free for the next number of weeks. These should make schooling at home a little easier!
Joe Wicks is taking 30 minute PE classes every morning on YouTube - the lessons are a great workout for children and parents alike. Check out today's lesson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wzoy_J3I_c
Amazon are offering a month free trial on Audio Books with plenty of books for children to enjoy listening to.
David Walliams is reading one of his stories online every day for the next 30 days - again these are interesting stories the children can listen while the adults take a well-earned break! https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/
NI Libraries are also offering online membership and books can be borrowed for reading or listening to. You can apply for membership online at: www.librariesni.org.uk
Epic, an app for reading, is also offering a free 30 day trial.
Cosmic Kids Yoga has plenty of calming, focused or energetic activities which cover mindfulness, dance, relaxation, stories and yoga. Check it out: https://www.cosmickids.com/category/watch/
Oti Mabuse from Strictly Come Dancing has a YouTube channel with dance classes for kids being streamed each day. These fun lessons can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC58aowNEXHHnflR_5YTtP4g
Another idea which would be good for children and adults is encouraging your child to write a letter or draw a picture for a resident in a Care Home such as Lisnisky or in a Fold such as Quarry Gardens. The residents in many places like these are no longer receiving visitors due to social restrictions so they might appreciate a letter or picture from a young child. Letters or pictures could be posted or delivered when your family are out for their daily exercise regime.
Lots of great ways to read with your child, listen to stories or read themselves. Different ways to keep them active engage in activities which would brighten the days
of others. Hopefully these will be useful in the days ahead.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
