• SCHOOL CROSSING PATROL REVIEW – BALLYHANNON ROAD

  As you will be aware we are very sad to say goodbye to our much-loved School Crossing Patrol Person Ms Eida Andriusiene at the end of this week. We will miss her and wish her well as she returns home.

   

  Further to liaison with the Education Authority Transport Section, who recruit and employ staff for School Crossing Patrol duties, we have been informed that the Ballyhannon Road crossing is subject to a review prior to a new person being deployed. We have not been given a timeframe for this review and have been informed that they are conducted expeditiously in date order, as their resources allow within the Transport Section.

  Despite raising this on 23^rd September, it now seems unlikely that EA will have completed the review and appointed a replacement in time for our return to school on Monday 4^th November.  EA Transport have asked the school to inform parents that if no School Crossing Patrol (SCP) is available it would be recommended that the school “…communicate to parents that there will be no SCP in operation at the site and parents should be encouraged to follow road safety guidance which is publicly available at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/road-safety.”  Additional information is also provided on the EA webpage at Safe School Transport. They have also highlighted that “It is important to note that even where an SCP is in operation, parents remain primarily responsible for their child’s safe journey to and from school. Parents should be encouraged to follow road safety guidance which is publicly available at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/road-safety.”

   

  Clearly, we are very concerned about the safety of our pupils crossing the Ballyhannon Road and will be vigorously arguing for the retention of the SCP on the Ballyhannon Road. I would also ask that full use is made of our crossing patrol this week in the event of the review/survey being conducted during the last week of term – this will be unannounced. It will be the outworkings of the review/survey that will determine the future of the SCP. In the interim I am asking all parents and carers to make suitable arrangements after half term to supervise their children crossing the Ballyhannon Road from 4^th November onwards. Unfortunately, as a school we are not permitted to employ a replacement ourselves. I will keep parents/carers informed of the progress of the review and how we can lobby for its retention.

• October Football Festival

  Well done to our football team for their efforts in the October Football Festival. The boys managed to come second in their group. Some great football was played and we all enjoyed the morning out. 

  

• Maths Week Tuckshop

  Today we celebrated the end of our Maths Week by coming to school wearing our own clothes with numbers, shapes or patterns on them. We also got to go to the first School Council tuckshop of the year, which was a huge success.

  School Council made £220 profit today and have enough stock for their next tuckshop, which they hope to run in December. 

  

• Maths Week Assembly

  To celebrate Maths Week we had a special Assembly today and we had 10 very important visitors who joined us.

  We played a game of matching the job titles to our visitors and then the winners of Numberhunt received their prizes. Well done to everyone who took part - the teachers had a very hard decision to make to choose their winners!

  All classes have been taking part in lots of different Maths activities around the school this week.

  On Friday we are celebrating the end of Maths Week by coming to school dressed in something that has a number, pattern or shape on it and bringing money for an exciting School Council tuck shop!
  Huge thank you to our visitors for coming in and helping to make our Maths Week a roaring success. 

  

• Hockey Tournament

  The girls and I had a great day at Lurgan College. They played six matches and won 3, drew 2 and lost 1. They played some super hockey. Well done.

  

• Election of Parent Representatives to Bocombra PS Board of Governors.

  Election of Parent Representatives to Bocombra PS Board of Governors. Thank you to all six of our nominees who allowed their names to be considered to serve as parent representatives for the 2024-28 term on our Board of Governors. Also, thank you to all of our parents and carers who cast votes in their hundreds to elect the two new representatives. It gives me great pleasure to inform all of our parents and carers that Mrs. Jayne Marrs and Mrs. Natasha McBride have been successful in receiving the most votes in our ballot and as clerk to the ballot I will now forward their names to the Education Authority for ratification. • MacMillan Coffee Morning another huge success

  Thank you so much to our parents, grandparents and friends of Bocombra who turned out to support our annual MacMillan coffee morning. The children also enjoyed wearing Green and bringing a treat break today. We raised over £1100 pounds which is a fantastic amount for a worthy charity. 
  Special thanks to our new School Council who brought in buns and cakes and did a fantastic job of welcoming everyone. Also huge thanks to our teachers who baked lots of delicious treats for our visitors.

  

• New Digital Leaders

  We have elected a new group of digital leaders.  They will be busy during the year organising and assisting with our iPads, deciding on how to promote safe use of the internet, helping younger children with their ICT and assisting with keeping our ICT tidy.

• School Improvement Council elections and results!

  Our School Council elections took place on Friday and P5, P6 and P7 pupils listened to lots of fantastic speeches. Well done to all candidates who prepared a poster and worked hard to learn their speeches - nearly 60 pupils put themselves forward and should be very proud of their efforts! 
  The successful candidates are as follows:

  Year 6: Evie Hanna, Myla Chapman, George McFarland and Charlotte Matchett
