This year we celebrated World Book Day with our competition 'The Masked Reader'. Everyone from Nursery to Year 7 was given the challenge of making a mask of their favourite book character. As can be seen from the photographs, everyone rose to the challenge and showed their creative and artistic skills. After our mask parade, the winners from each class were announced and they received a prize goody bag. To share our reading and writing skills, Key Stage 2 children read stories to children in their Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1 reading partner class. Well done to everyone for making a superb effort!
We were delighted to welcome local author Lynda Haffey to Bocombra. Lynda kindly shared her story with everyone in school from the children in Nursery to pupils in P.7. Everyone enjoyed hearing Lynda read 'The Mindful Sloth', engaged with how Bob the sloth can help us learn a few life lessons and sang along with part of the story too. Lynda kindly answered some questions from Key Stage 2 children about how to write stories and become an author. A huge thank you to Lynda for inspiring the children to read books and write their own stories before we celebrate World Book Day next week.
Our cross country team took part in Triathlon training before Christmas and they finally received their certificates in a recent assembly. The reason for holding on to their certificates was because we had been asked to wait until the launch of the TriHeroes promotional video on Triathlon Ireland’s social media channels. Triathlon Ireland have chosen Bocombra to be the only school in their video to promote their TriHeroes programme which is a great achievement. You can check out their video on their social media channels or on our Video Resource Centre.
This week our School Council were hard at work cleaning our bike shed. They managed to get some much needed help from our Sustrans officer Dave and did amazingly well at scrubbing the dirt off the sides of our bike shed. They are hoping to put some colourful posters to encourage more pupils to use the bike shed to store their bicycles and scooters. They were rewarded with a hard earned hot chocolate after their efforts, which was badly needed to warm their freezing hands!
On Friday 3rd February Mr Sloan and Mr Burton from KIllicomaine JHS Technology department came to visit our Friday afternoon technology group. Mr Sloan taught the group about electrical circuits and provided all the materials for each person to make a sign that lit up. Everyone got to use a soldering iron and copper tape to make their circuit so their light would turn on. It was great fun and everyone learnt lots during the session. A huge thank you to them both for visiting us and teaching us how to make our sign.
Today our cross country teams ran their final race of the Primary Schools Cross Flahavans competition. It was a very tough run at Palace Stables made even more difficult with a very muddy course. Well done to everyone who ran brilliantly and should be very proud of themselves. Special congratulations to those new runners who ran their first ever race as we had some pupils who weren’t able to run - they did incredibly well! Results will be available on the Athletics NI website later this afternoon.
We are delighted to have the 'Travelling Books' book fair in school from Friday 3rd to Wednesday 8th February. Every book bought will earn reward points for teachers to spend on resources for our classrooms and libraries. Children have browsed the book fair shelves with their class teacher to see which books they would like to buy. Remember to bring your money to school or come and visit the book fair in the Year 1 play area at home time with a parent or guardian.
