The boys' rugby team travelled the short distance to Portadown Rugby Club to play in the Gilpin Cup (11.4.19). On arrival the boys were pitted against, Edenderry PS, Dickson PS, Orchard PS and Armstrong PS. They played Edenderry first, running out 4 tries to 1, winners. Next up was Armstrong, the boys beat them 3 tries to 0. Dickson and Orchard were the final two group games which again ended in convincing victories. An excellent overall tournament was topped off by a final match against local rivals Seagoe. Although it was a friendly, you could tell there was a lot at stake, with most of the boys knowing each other from their club rugby. It was a hard fought game which ended in a 3 tries to 0 win for the boys. Another brilliant sporting achievement for a Bocombra PS sports team and all at the school are incredibly proud of the boys. The season doesn’t finish there, as the boys have just been informed they have been invited back to the Kingspan tournament on the 9th May. Something for the team to prepare for after Easter.
The boys started defending their league title on 27th February at Banbridge High School. They coped well with the expectations from last year and lack of match practice. The boys ended the league tournament as champions for another year scoring plenty of goals and not conceding any.
Next up was the Northern Ireland Qualifying tournament on 6th March at KJHS. Again, a competition the boys had won last year so expectations were high. They managed these expectations and once again won the tournament after a tense final game against King’s Park PS (Lurgan). As a result of their victory, the boys progressed to the Northern Ireland Finals at Stormont. We knew that this competition would be very difficult, however the boys topped their group without any complications. They progressed to the next round of knockouts and played against Moneymore and Seagoe. First up was Moneymore, a very difficult game ending in a draw (1-1). Moneymore went on to beat Seagoe 3-1 meaning we had to beat Seagoe by 3 goals without conceding. The boys beat Seagoe 6-1 progressing to the semi-final for the first time. Inchmarlo awaited the boys in the semi-final, three time winners of the competition, the odds were against the boys. The match itself was not the one sided affair some might have expected. The boys applied constant pressure, nearly scoring on a number of occasions and dealing with any threat Inchmarlo provided. Until, a well hit shot rifled into the bottom corner of our net to make it 1-0 Inchmarlo. The boys demonstrated tremendous spirit and managed to equalise late in the match to take the game to golden goal. The boys came within inches of upsetting the odds but the Inchmarlo reverse ended the boys hopes of glory. A valiant display for a team missing players through injury and a debutant goal keeper. The boys finished the tournament in 3rd place. The 3rd best boy’s hockey team in Northern Ireland, a magnificent feat for a superb hockey team with plenty left to play for this season. Everyone at Bocombra Primary School are very proud of the team and their achievements, hoping this will continue in the upcoming tournaments (Décor Trophy & Portadown Times Tournament).
Today we held our second Big Bocombra Breakfast and it was another resounding success. We were delighted to see so many people brave the colder weather and make an active journey to school on the last day of our Big Pedal competition. We are looking forward to seeing where we finish among schools in Northern Ireland as today we had nearly 400 people (adults and children) making active journeys to school. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us throughout the past 2 weeks of the Big Pedal Active Travel competition. We managed to raise £390 today for school funds which is a wonderful total and will be of a great help in school. Thank you again to everyone who turned up this morning!
